Hello UMD Extension Service Expert, What time this autumn would be the best time to plant spring-flowering bulbs given that we're having an unusually warm autumn this year? Best regards, Germaine

Expert Response

The ideal time to plant spring-flowering bulbs is in autumn, as soon as they are purchased/received. If someone can’t plant right away, store bulbs around 60-65°F away from light and moisture. According to the Netherlands Flower Bulb Centre, the best time to plant spring-flowering bulbs in the mid-Atlantic region is between late September and late November. As long as the ground hasn’t frozen, they could be planted as late as New Year’s, though you would be risking poor flowering the later they are installed. Water them in well after planting, given the prolonged drought the state is experiencing.
