Asked November 13, 2024, 10:29 AM EST

Just went to wrap my apple trees and found a sad sight. I am worried these are too damaged to survive and was wondering if there is anything I can do. First year apple trees, planted Spring '24 Tree #2 is significantly more damaged

Hennepin County Minnesota

Expert Response

Ouch!

Tree # 2 looks pretty damaged. Because they are so young, it is hard to say if they will make it.

I would go ahead and put protection around them and wait to see if they leaf out in the spring. The damage looks like complete girdling but if it isn’t too deep they could heal.

Keep them watered well until the ground freezes to help them through the winter.

And mulch them.
