I have a beautiful tree that was planted about a year ago. The needles are browning toward the trunk and have definitely thinned. What is happening and what do I need to do about it?

Expert Response
Hi Lindsey,
Based on what I can see in the photo, your tree is displaying normal fall needle-loss. Conifers lose their oldest needles in the fall as the deciduous trees are dropping their leaves.
No special action is required.
Because it's a new tree, do be sure that it doesn't dry out over the winter (check the root ball with your finger when temperatures are warm and conditions are dry; water if the top inch or so is dry and it's above 40F).
Cordially,
John
