Baywise or other Program? #889698

Asked November 12, 2024, 9:56 AM EST

A neighbor has this sign in their yard stating that they are Baywise and to ask you for details. (I called the number on the sign and it goes to. a nursing home company). I have also seen signs in other people’s yards stating that they are a “certified wildlife sanctuary”. I want to explore/learn more about this idea and doing what I need to get a similar sign in my yard. Can you help with any information? Thank you.

Expert Response

Unfortunately the phone number is indeed out of date, given the age of that particular sign, and new versions won't have that incorrect info. We recommend that you reach out to your county Master Gardener program to learn about Bay-Wise (the  MG coordinator contact info. is on the linked page). Certified wildlife habitat signage could be from any number of other agencies (outside of Extension), as several entities each have their own criteria and certification programs, so we'd need to see the sign to try to determine which organization produced it. (Possibly the National Wildlife Federation.) Master Gardeners in your community likely know about a variety of other certification programs for wildlife and habitat creation that they can direct you towards for more information.
