Moles in perennial garden #889693

Asked November 12, 2024, 8:14 AM EST

I have a 5 tiered perennial garden adjacent to our house that shows clear signs of the "jumping worms". I also have at least one mole. I couple of times I have had a plant sink 3-4". I assume from mole activity. Should I suffer the mole to reduce the worms or not. Thanks

Expert Response

Hi, Lois – Thank you for contacting UNH Ask Extension’s Infoline regarding which would be better in your garden: a mole or jumping worms. That’s such an intriguing and thoughtful question. As you noted, moles are predators of the jumping worm. Moles also play an important role in the management of soil, grubs, and other insects. Jumping worms, on the other hand, do not have any helpful role in your yard. Based on these considerations, the mole seems the better choice!

Following is a link that includes information about how to control moles and also the benefits of moles. (Specifically, see “Economics of damage and control,” toward the end of the article.)
