Fire resistant ground covers #889674

Asked November 11, 2024, 3:59 PM EST

I am a master naturalist, I live in southern Oregon on a semi rural property in Ashland. I qualified as a Firesafe property through the City of Ashland. I am wondering what are the most fire resistant ground covers that you would recommend for the 0 to 5 foot zone around my house? That area now consists of decomposed granite and light compost after removal of 3 inches of for bark mulch

Jackson County Oregon

Expert Response

Where plants are situated and how they are maintained is key! Healthy plants are more Firewise than the alternative, meaning: appropriately sited, well pruned, planted at the right depth and properly irrigated. This list is just a starting point. Most perennials are also naturally fire resistant and are an important part of any landscape.
Suggested ground covers:
Arctostaphylos uva-ursi – Kinnickinnick
Asarum caudatum – Wild Ginger
Campanula p. ‘Birch Hybrid’ – Creeping Bellflower
Ceratostigma plumbaginoides – Hardy Plumbago
Delosperma spp. – Hardy Ice plant
Fragaria spp. – Creeping Strawberry
Herniaria glabra – Rupturewort
Origanum v. ‘Compactum’ – Dwarf Greek Oregano
Saponaria ocymoides – Rock Soapwort
Sedum spp. - Stonecrop
Teucrium chamaedrys – Creeping Germander
Thymus spp. – Creeping Thyme
Veronica spp. – Speedwell

Hope this helps!
