Firebrats and silverfish (bristletails) are fairly common and can be difficult to completely eliminate indoors. To help reduce their numbers it is recommended to use a combination of methods related to cleaning, de-humidification, and habitat reduction.
Firebrats typically feed on dead insects and other high protein food items and prefer warm/hot temperatures (90°F and above), often found near furnaces, ovens, hot water pipes, fireplaces, and attics.
Ensure any food items are in airtight containers (including flour, grains, and pet food/treats). In any areas you are seeing firebrats, vacuum carpets, flooring and furniture regularly. Consider reducing any cluttered paper items like newspapers, books, or boxes.
Sometimes high humidity can support bristletails, so consider utilizing a dehumidifier in any damp areas in the home, while also looking for any sources of excess moisture.
Seal any openings cracks or crevices around windows or baseboards that may be providing access from the outdoors.
Sticky traps can help to trap bristletails but they are typically used to survey for their presence and to confirm if there are silverfish or firebrats (as they each have different habitat preferences).
If you find there are a high number of bristletails after using these non-chemical control measures, then you may consider contacting a professional pest control company to discuss other options.
In regards to the silica gel, this is a product that is used to reduce moisture in a certain area and/or to dehydrate the firebrat itself (when the product comes into direct contact with the pest), depending on the product's form; known broadly as a desiccant product. For more information on desiccants, please see this web page: https://www.beyondpesticides.org/resources/safety-source-on-pesticide-providers/what-is-integrated-pest-management/desiccating-dusts#:~:text=Silica%20Aerogels&text=Silica%20gel%20is%20actually%20a,not%20allow%20contact%20with%20skin. We unfortunately cannot recommend specific brands. You may try your local hardware or gardening store and asking if they carry any of these products. Be sure to read and follow all label directions when using any product. Many of these desiccant-type products can cause respiratory irritation when inhaled. Always wear a dust mask, goggles, and any other recommended personal protective equipment the product label advises.
