Hi Loretta, thanks for the question.

Choosing an ornamental tree can be challenging.  Besides size, shape, deer resistance, etc. there are other factors like messiness, flower color, pest/disease resistance, soil, et al.  In many cases a shrub may fit instead of a tree.  For you location here are some suggestions.

Redbud (Cercis canadensis)

Japanese Lilac (Syringa reticulata)

Littleleaf Linden (Tilia cordata)*

Serviceberry (Amelanchier spp.

Fringe Tree (Chionensis retusus

Dogwood (Cornus spp.)

* susceptible to Japanese beetle

Note that deer resistance does not mean deer proof.  Deer (especially when food is scarce) will eat most anything.

There are many varieties/cultivars of these plants. Some may be larger or smaller. Flower color may vary.  It would be a good idea to get a soil test (Home | MSU Soil Test) to be sure the soil (especially pH) is conducive to the tree you pick.  This should give you a good place to start. I hope this is helpful.
