Suncald on an autumn blaze #889586

Asked November 09, 2024, 3:04 PM EST

Hello, I'm a member from minnesota, and I have an Autumn Blaze maple with suncald on the south side. I had previously trimmed away the dead bark, but this is where it sits a year later. Should I be doing anything this winter to protect this tree?

Expert Response

Thanks for the question.

I am encouraged by the extent to which healing is occurring around this scar. Note the upward curling of the scar’s edges. The tree is attempting to seal off the opening. I also do not see any liquid/sap coming from this wound. This means that the risk of fungal infection should be low. There really is nothing for you to do at this point.  Just be patient.  With time, things should continue to improve.   If in spring 2025 things worsen, you may want to have a professional, licensed arborist make an onsite assessment. Usually there is no charge for this. See:
