Cedar bark being scraped #889580

Asked November 09, 2024, 11:42 AM EST

I've come home from a three-week vacation to find the bark being scraped on my cedar tree. Any ideas what's happening?

Expert Response

Deer can scrape off bark when they rub their antlers against the trunk as they try to remove velvet.
Squirrels will sometimes strip the bark off an entire tree or the branches gathering nest material. I was shown photos of 10 maples stripped of their bark over the winter when I took a class about trees and wildlife.  It was unbelievable but squirrels did the damage.
Deer damage is the most likely.
