Onion sets November planting #889575

Asked November 09, 2024, 8:48 AM EST

Am I to late to plant onion sets? Purchased at Walmart in spring. Yellow, white , and red multi pack. Don't have any idea if short, med, or long season. They grew very little this season so I pulled them all and am considering replanting now if not to late. Zone 7a-7b Ballenger Creek

Expert Response

Hi- you can grow onions through the fall that will overwinter and produce bulbs in spring.

But the seedlings or sets would need to be planted by around mid-September. Even with above normal air and soil temps we don't think your sets will be able to establish a root system prior to freezing temps. Also, your sets were probably stressed or damaged if they didn't grow during the '24 growing season. Onions are biennial plants, pproducing a seedstalk in year two. Even if the sets re-establish now, it's likely they would bolt (go to seed) when temps warm in spring.

Do you think they are edible
