Mushroom Risk to Dogs #889568

Asked November 08, 2024, 8:23 PM EST

Good evening,

There's a cluster of mushrooms growing out of a tree stump in my recently finished dog run. The tree was felled about 3 years ago, and in that time nothing grow out of or near the stump except a tree of heaven, blackberry vines, and numerous poke bushes.

This summer, I cleared the space, put down landscape fabric, dumped about 4 yards of cedar chips, and turned it into a dog run.

Now those things are growing up out of the stump.

Long story short: Are they poisonous or toxic to dogs? I tried searching online, and while the results looked similar, every result came back with a different name.

Thank you for your time and help!

Expert Response

Thanks for your question.  One of the critical features for identifying mushrooms is to look at whether they have gills (like a store bought white or tan mushroom has) or pores (sort of looks like a fine sponge underneath).  I asked someone who knows more about mushrooms than I do and lives in OR if they could tell what the species was from your photos, and the response was not without seeing whether it had gills or pores.  It may also help if you know what kind of tree the stump is from.

You will probably get a more definitive answer by sending photos to your local Mycological Association.  There is a list here, https://kitsapmushrooms.org/resources/northwest-mushroom-organizations/, of ones in the the Pacific NW.

I hope this helps,
