Pruning Japanese spirea #889547

Asked November 08, 2024, 2:55 PM EST

Hello, I purchased 3 Japanese spirea shrubs about 3 years ago at the Arboretum sale. They are growing well but I getting taller and wider than I expected. When and how much should they be pruned? Thank you

Hi,

You can prune them any time but doing while they are dormant is best and easier because than you can see the shape the most clearly.

You can cut them all the way down but I suggest just shaping them. Always cut just above a bud so you have all sorts of partially dead branch tips sticking out all over.
