Ash tree disease control #889544

Asked November 08, 2024, 1:52 PM EST

I was made aware of ash tree disease because of a recent TV news show, and the fact that it also affects other trees besides. I have been noticing that many of my ornamental trees are affected with the symptoms of this, as are many other trees around town. is there a cure? should I sound an alarm at City Hall?

John: I think you have been hearing about the emerald ash borer (EAB) a truly devastating insect that was found in the Forest Grove/Hillsboro area several. years ago. EABs have wiped out much of the Ash trees in the Central states and the east coast. It is not at all nice. Control is difficult and very expensive. Their range is expanding and they will probably arrive within 5 years or sooner in Columbia county. It will attack both our native ash trees and non-native ornamental ash trees. They don't do much damage to other species of trees, mostly ashes. Here is a link to information on this problem: https://extension.oregonstate.edu/catalog/pub/em-9380-oregon-ash-insects-pathogens-tree-health#pathogens I hope this helps you understand what is going on.
