When to trim oak tree #889526

Asked November 08, 2024, 10:25 AM EST

Hi, We live in Cleveland and our large oak tree has some dead branches falling off but overall is okay so we would like it trimmed. I know it is supposed to be trimmed when "dormant" but with the unseasonably warm weather am afraid if getting it trimmed this November is too early. Do I need to wait at least until the first frost or a certain temperature to be safer? Thank you!

Expert Response

One of the primary reasons for waiting until the dormant season is to help eliminate beetles from being immediately attracted to the newly opened wounds. At this point in the Fall, you should be safe to have the oak tree pruned.

Best of luck,

Jim
