When to fertilize new ground for vegetable garden #889463

My soil test results recommend a 12-12-12 fertilizer and potash for my soil. This is new ground just broken for a garden to be planted next spring. I am currently working at building up the soil with compost material, but am wondering if it benefits the soil at all to add fertilizer now (in the fall) as well as in the spring, or should I wait and add it, as instructed, before planting in the spring?

Hi Dirk, thanks for the question.
In most cases it is better to wait to fertilize in the spring. Both potassium and nitrogen can leach out of the soil due to rain and melting soil. Runoff can also be a concern.
I hope this is helpful.
