Green Giant Arborvitae Browning #889432

Asked November 06, 2024, 12:40 PM EST

These trees were planted about 3 years ago and this is the first time I have noticed this browning on the interior needles. It was only about a month ago that I first saw something on one of them, but now it’s on all of them and appears to be getting worse. It is definitely only in the interior needles closest to the trunk and I would say mostly on the shadier side of the tree stand. What do you think is going on here? Is the browning anything to worry about and if so anything I can/should do? Thanks!

It is normal for many evergreens to drop older, internal needles at this time of year.
Here is our page about it:

We have experienced two consecutive years of prolonged drought, including hardly any rain for the last month. If you are able, offer supplemental water before the ground freezes for the winter to your newish trees.
Tree roots continue growing even after trees have lost their leaves in autumn. Evergreens that go into winter are better able to withstand winter damage.
