Timing for tree trimmming #889380

I want to schedule a tree trimmer for a couple trees in my backyard, but I believe you should not do that until after a freeze. My question is, have we had a hard enough freeze in Lucas County this fall so that it is OK to trim a large oak and hickory nut tree now? My understanding is if you trim branches off a tree before a hard freeze, insects can burrow into the areas where the limbs were cut off and the tree could die.
I would appreciate any advice you can give me.
Thanks!

Hi. Now is a good time to start thinking about pruning, and you are basically correct about the insect issue, though it is a question of when an oak is dormant rather than whether or not there has been a hard freeze. Timing is less of an issue for hickories because the specific issue you want to avoid is oak wilt disease. This article from last year’s Ohio State University’s Buckeye Yard and Garden Online Newsletter emphasizes the importance of pruning oaks in the dormant season and includes some more information about oak wilt that you might find useful, including this link to Ohio State’s fact sheet on it. The fact sheet indicates that oaks should be pruned after October 1st, and the BYGL article says that they should be pruned after October 15th. In general, you should be safe at this time of year (early November), but it has also been an usually warm year, so I would suggest waiting a bit longer to be on the safe side. There is no downside to waiting a bit longer. I think many certified arborists don’t prune oaks until December to minimize risks as much as possible.
One arborist came out today to look at the red oak (I didn't know before the actual type of oak) and we talked about oak wilt. He suggested waiting a bit longer too. I am so apprehensive about this never having a tree trimmed previously. I don't want to kill my tree! First, thank you for responding and for the informaiton. I really appreciate it! One other thing, In your response you gave "this link" to an Ohio State fact sheet. When I click on the link, I get an advertisement for an Iphone 16. I tried the link a couple times, and I always get the advertisement and nothing else. Could you try sending the link again, or give me the web address? Thank you. Nancy
Hi Nancy. I'm glad that information was helpful and that your arborist and I were on the same page! I also appreciate you letting me know about the bad link. I will fix it in my original posting and resend it (so others don't have the same issue), but I am also pasting it here:
