Bulbs growing out of season #889273

Asked November 03, 2024, 3:15 PM EST

I have some glads and daffodil bulbs that have started sprouting. They are outside in a pot, green growth about 2 inches. Any ideas?

Expert Response

They are growing because the bulbs think spring has arrived we have had rain, cold snaps and warm ups. Bulbs planted in containers rarely survive a MN winter because of thawing too early and frost heave. Daffodils are usually planted about 5-6 inches deep in the ground so the large amount of soil buffers the temperature. I would, if they were mine, sink the pot in the ground if it’s possible. If it isn’t possible I would plant half the bulbs in the ground at the recommended depth and keep my fingers crossed.

Glads aren’t hardy here and need to be stored in a cool location, because they have started growing you might be able to grow them inside but getting them enough light to bloom is very challenging.
