Hi, Please advise the best time to trim back my hydrangea bush/tree (now or early spring? And how far to go? I would like to get it back to a manageable height in front of my dining room window.

Hello Terri.

Your plant is a Panicle hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculate). Read here about culture and care of panicle hydrangeas: https://www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/PlantFinder/PlantFinderDetails.aspx?kempercode=c313

Panicle hydrangea should be pruned in early spring, before the plants start into active growth. Pruning is not essential but plants flower better if pruned back annually to a woody framework.

Panicle hydrangeas usually respond well to a hard pruning if they have outgrown their space. Cut back to a woody framework, as low as 10 inches above the ground, every year. If done in the late winter or early spring, it is likely that they will bloom that summer or early fall.
