Odd growth on espalier apple tree #889242

Asked November 02, 2024, 5:30 PM EDT

I live mid coast, less than 1/2 mile from shore, but up out of of main fog zone. I have a south-facing apple tree. A Akane or King main branch has patches of growth along underside. Is it something that needs to be treated and with what? Photo attached

Expert Response

Thanks for your question.

What you are seeing on your apple tree is called burr knot, which is a highly branched, dwarf root system that occurs above the soil line.   Its cause is genetic.

Here is some information from the Pacific Northwest Plant Disease Management Handbook - https://pnwhandbooks.org/plantdisease/host-disease/apple-malus-spp-burrknot

In the Cultural Control section, it does indicate that you can remove the burr knots with a knife or blowtorch. You may have to repeat this treatment. Untreated, these burr knots can cause stunted tree growth and also tree structural problems.
