Pre-Emergent #889230

Asked November 02, 2024, 1:59 PM EDT

Hello, We need to put down Bermuda grass seed next year, probably mid May. We are trying to grow our lawn from seed to avoid high costs and don't mind waiting a few years for it to get established. But crabgrass prevailed this year and we would like to prevent it from coming back next year. I know about pre-emergent, but I'm afraid it will interfere with the Bermuda grass seed. When would be the best time to put down the pre-emergent and still have the Bermuda grow when we put it down in May?

Expert Response

Hello! In general you need to wait 2 weeks after a herbicide to plant a grass seed, including Bermuda. But, it will depend on the herbicide you choose. Check the manufacturers recommendations of your chosen herbicide for the best advice. Some will tell you 3 months, such as the Dimension product often used for crabgrass. You have lots of time before spring so good luck and please let me know if you have any other questions. Thank you for reaching out!
