Hi all! I recently pulled a bunch of weeds out of my yard and a lot of dirt came up with them. I have a new raised bed (17” high) and was wondering if I could use that dirt for a lower level in the bed. It would most certainly contain some weed debris. Alternatively, can you advise on what to do with this dirt? It is too much to get picked up by the county. Thank you!

Expert Response
It should be fine to use within the raised bed, as any weed seeds in the added soil will be buried too deeply to germinate. Plus, the older they get, those seeds will gradually lose viability (how fast can depend on the weed species), so even if the bed were to be tilled or mixed (which shouldn't be necessary), bringing buried seeds to the surface, not all would germinate.
