Asked November 02, 2024, 10:32 AM EDT

Why did my hydrangea turn brown and get spots on leaves. It is a Quick Fire Fab Panicle Hydrangea. It is in a full sun area.

Washington County Maryland

Expert Response

This is natural for this time of year. The flowers don't stay colorful for that long here.
The yellowing leaves are the normal beginning of the gradual decline and eventual fall of the leaves of (non-evergreen) plants/trees in autumn, called 'senescence.'
These shrubs will lose all of their leaves for the winter.
The yellowing leaves are actually a nice fall color.
According to the plant description, there may be some red hues eventually as well, but you'll have to wait and see. The prolonged drought periods this season can mute fall color, and growers of these plants are from much colder areas of the country than Maryland.
