Asked November 01, 2024, 8:02 PM EDT

These moss like ground covers are taking over my flower beds. What are they and how do I get rid of them. Thank you for your help.

Expert Response

Dear JoAnn,

Thank you for contacting us about the weeds in your garden beds. Both plants appear to be mosses and I believe they are  Aciachne pulvinata and Rhizomnium magnifolium, respectively.

Mosses grow when there is sufficient shade and moisture. The best way to prevent them is to change the growing conditions or use mulch. We recommend 2 to 3-inches of an organic mulch in gardens.

Many people like one or both of these plants, so whether to keep them is entirely up to you. If you wish to control them, they are fairly easy to remove by pulling. Chemicals are neither necessary or recommended.

I hope this information is helpful. Please write again if you have any other questions.
