Bee lawn / Tree replacements #889194

Asked November 01, 2024, 3:58 PM EDT

1. Would like to put in a new bee lawn this month at my residence in Plymouth Minnesota. Before doing so, wanted to ask if you are aware of any county or local rules against doing so? Hate to spend the money only to end up causing a problem for myself. 2. If I go ahead, this will be a new install, not an overseed. Are there any seed blends extension is recommending for this? 3. Tree questions: I've lost 5 trees in the past two years due to bugs (emerald ash borer) or weather. Two are those very tall and narrow pines. One was a birch. Two were ash trees. I'd like to plant a new birch. I'd also like to replace the tall, narrow pines, but don't know what kind of trees to pick. Lastly, I'd welcome suggestions on replacements for the ash trees. This will all be done next spring. Can you suggest tree replacements to consider? Cannot thank you enough for helping me with my questions! -john

Expert Response

  1. We cannot find any specific rules or ordinances in Plymouth that prohibit creating bee-friendly lawns. In fact, there's a growing trend in Minnesota to support pollinator-friendly landscapes. Double check with your county offices to be sure. You might also check into the "Lawns to Legumes" program that encourages Minnesota residents to create pollinator-friendly yards. This program offers workshops, coaching, and help installing native plantings in residential lawns.
2.  Look for the UMN Bee Lab/Twin City Seed bee lawn mix to seed your property.  The U generally recommends blending fine fescues with low-growing flowers.  See https://extension.umn.edu/landscape-design/planting-and-maintaining-bee-lawn

3.  There is a plethora of great trees that you can choose.  For detailed information on your choices, depending on your site and your desires, see https://extension.umn.edu/find-plants/trees-and-shrubs

Good luck.
