Greetings,
So I can best assist, are you looking to plant for grass seed production/sale or for a land cover?

The seed would be to create a lawn that I can mow with my riding mower. The area would connect to my existing grass yard.

Dear Richard,
Thank you for contacting us about establishing a new lawn. Here is an OSU publication that may help you:

It may be getting a bit late for seeding this fall, but check the extended forecast to see if there is time to plant seed. Check with your garden center or seed supply to see if there is a mix that is best for your growing conditions. The article cited above provides information about various species (see Table 2). I suggest looking for a mix that has more rye and fescue, and less Kentucky blue grass.
Be sure to prepare the soil properly, remove weeds and apply a half-inch of compost to the surface. Place a ring of mulch 2 to 3 inches deep around trees and shrubs (keep it several inches away from the trunks). This will make mowing easier and protect the trees and shrubs from damage.
I hope this information is helpful. Please write again if you have additional questions.
