Fig tree galls on branches #889139

Asked October 31, 2024, 7:40 PM EDT

My friend’s fig tree has gall like balls on many branches but none on the roots. What are they and is there any treatment please? Thanks very much

I just want to confirm the picture is in fact branches rather than roots.

Galls on branches are caused by feeding or egg-laying by mites, and sometimes a few other types of insects. However, this level of galling seems like a different cause. If these are branches, then this damage is probably due to a bacteria or nematode. Unfortunately, there isn't any treatment. If there are some healthy branches left, you could leave those and cut off the damaged ones with a clean tool. Otherwise, I'm not optimistic for the future health of this plant.
