My friend’s fig tree has gall like balls on many branches but none on the roots. What are they and is there any treatment please?

My friend’s fig tree has gall like balls on many branches but none on the roots. What are they and is there any treatment please?

I just want to confirm the picture is in fact branches rather than roots.
Galls on branches are caused by feeding or egg-laying by mites, and sometimes a few other types of insects. However, this level of galling seems like a different cause. If these are branches, then this damage is probably due to a bacteria or nematode. Unfortunately, there isn't any treatment. If there are some healthy branches left, you could leave those and cut off the damaged ones with a clean tool. Otherwise, I'm not optimistic for the future health of this plant.
