Pruning Wound Protection article #889128

Read article about pruning wound protection, coautbored by Dr. Patty Skinkis. Questions about application using Vitiseal, 1 Do you spray on cut or paint on? 2 If spray on, is there any concern about covering buds. Does it inhibit bud growth? 3 Do you apply it to all cut surfaces, such as cane ends in cane pruning? Or just cover major cut ends close to or on the trunk? PS, great article, I am a believer in protection of cut ends but this is first evidence of positive benefits

You must use the product in accordance with its label for optimum results. The label for Vitseal can be found at the product website:  https://www.vitiseal.com/services. Based on the label, it indicates "painting" the product and using at a rate of 1/2 gallon per acre.

The product should be applied to any cut ends of the vine (e.g., ends of spurs or canes). It need not only be placed on large pruning wounds. However, it is critical that the large pruning wounds are the priority. It is not typically sprayed over the entire vine. There are no reports of the product causing damage to the buds. In the case of our research study, we applied the product to the pruning wounds only and did not see any abnormal growth to the buds on the vine nor the ones immediately near the application point. Of course, when we painted the product on, there is some dripping onto the buds, and we had normal growth.
