Asked October 23, 2024, 12:57 PM EDT

My 2year old maple was scraped on the bottom of the trunk in its first year. A hole is developing. Is there anything I can do to keep it from getting bigger?

Expert Response

Hello,

I’m sorry to hear about your red maple tree! Here are some steps you can take to help prevent the hole from getting bigger and protect your tree:

Clean the Wound: Gently clean the area around the wound with water to remove dirt or debris. Avoid using any harsh chemicals.

Prune Damaged Bark: Use a sharp, clean knife to trim away any loose or damaged bark around the wound. Make sure to cut back to healthy bark, creating a smooth edge around the wound. Consult with an arborist if you are unsure about this procedure.

Avoid Wound Dressings: Research suggests that applying wound dressings or sealants can sometimes do more harm than good by trapping moisture and promoting decay.

Protect from Further Damage: Use a tree guard or wrap to protect the trunk from further physical damage, such as lawn equipment or animals.

Monitor for Pests and Disease: Check the wound for signs of pests or disease. If you notice any issues, consult a local arborist or county extension office for specific advice.

Maintain Tree Health: Ensure your tree is well-watered, especially during dry periods, and consider applying a balanced fertilizer to promote overall health and vigor.

Professional Help: Based on what I see in your trunk wound, it might be best to consult a professional arborist to ensure the cleaning of the wound is done correctly. To find a certified arborist in your Zip Code, go to this link:
