White Swamp Oak - leaves turning yellow - #888533

Asked October 22, 2024, 7:09 PM EDT

The leaves on our Swamp Oak are turning yellow and dropping. Generally the leaves turn brown and remain on the tree through winter until spring. There are sppts on the underside that look like some type of insect. Do you recognize and suggest a treatment. See pictures

Expert Response

Hello Rick,

Thank you for reaching out. In your pictures, we are wondering if the spots are on all the leaves or just a few of the leaves? Are they on the dropping leaves? And are they on the browning leaves or only the yellowing leaves? Would you be willing to bring in a sample of an effected branch? A cluster of effected leaves attached to a piece of branch would be sufficient. We do charge $8 for the sample, and are available to take them Monday through Thursday from 8AM to 4:30PM at our office at 6934 S. Lima, Suite B, 80112.

We are trying to determine if this is one issue, or two. The dropping yellowing leaves, if not related to the spots, could be related to environmental stressors such as the extended dryness, drought, and heat we have experienced this summer.

What is the watering schedule for this tree? Are you watering it in the winter months as well as the warmer months? Due to the extended drought, winter watering is recommended so the tree would not have added stressors next season.

Thank you,

Jessie A. and Ellen B.
