Can you please tell me what animal you think is making all of these holes in my back yard?
I live near Annapolis out near the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.
This yard backs up to the woods.
I see a lot of gray squirrels around.
The holes are not more than two to three inches deep - I stuck a stick in them.

It could be any number of digging animal. If you are noticing squirrels, then it could be them burying nuts for the winter. It could also be skunks, racoons, fox etc looking for insects or worms.
You can refer to this graphic chart from Iowa state extension to see if you can tell what it may be but it seems like it is most likely squirrels.
