Expert Response

Your area is in zone 6b which is compatible with growing most apple varieties.
  • We generally recommend growers look to disease-resistant varieties and try growing those first. Some of them are ‘Enterprise', ‘Freedom', ‘Jonafree', and ‘Liberty'.
  • Apple trees need at least 8 hours of sun per day during the growing season.
  • Two varieties are required for successful pollination; one can be a crabapple. Before choosing an apple tree to plant, take a look around your neighborhood. A pollen source should be within 100 feet of the apple tree you plant to ensure the pollen gets to your tree.
If you don't see any crabapples or other apple trees that close, your best bet is to plant two trees of different varieties.
  • Dwarf apple trees will start bearing fruit 2 to 3 years after planting.
  • Standard size trees can take up to 8 years to bear fruit.
  • Some varieties are more susceptible to insect and disease damage than others.
  • Prune annually to keep apple trees healthy and productive.
  • The cultivars of apple you decide to grow need to be in bloom at the same time.I
