Soil test for contaminant #887763

Asked October 11, 2024, 5:41 PM EDT

A mature 40+ year old tree located in a parking strip near my house died. It was removed. About five months later, a new tree was planted in the same location. It was fertilized and watered but failed to grow and it died. Is there a test for soil contamination available that could determine if any tree will grow in that location?

Expert Response

Hi Suzanne,

Oh no, two trees?  That's heartbreaking!

I would recommend reaching out to the Metro Area Master Gardeners.  They would know best which soil tests are appropriate, and be able to connect you with a local soil testing facility.  Some Extension County Offices offer pH testing themselves.

The Metro Area Master Gardener hotline number is <personal data hidden>, or the Extension office can be reached at <personal data hidden>.  You could alternately email the Master Gardener Program Representative: <personal data hidden>.

This Ask Extension FAQ includes resources about types of soil testing and how to collect samples.

Wishing you the best of luck!

Warmly,
