I took the picture off of Vincent Creek in the Smith River drainage.

That is an adult female shield-backed katydid (Family: Tettigoniidae, subfamily: Tettigoniinae). I am not a specialist in this group of katydids, though, so I can't tell you the genus or species. I can tell it's a female because of the long egg-laying structure (ovipositor) at the end of the abdomen.
In North America, there are just over 120 named shield-backed katydid species in 25 genera.
