Recommendations for establishing ground cover / preventing soil erosion under a pine tree (Zone 6a)? #887688

Asked October 10, 2024, 4:46 PM EDT

Dear CSU Extension Master Gardeners, I am seeking your expertise on preventing further soil erosion and establishing green ground cover under a pine tree where the soil is currently bare. Could you recommend suitable ground covers or other methods that would thrive in this environment? I have attached a few representative photos. Possibly relevant information: - We recently regraded the yard with good quality top soil with compost, ready for planting - The pine tree is huge and the soil is bare under it - Every time the wind blows or it rains, soil gets washed onto the flagstone patio creating a huge mess - We have chickens, so ideally the ground cover could be aggressive / easy to establish

Hi Elise,
Thank you for your questions and the great pics attached.  It looks like the area under the pine may get some sun but choosing ground covers that will be happy in a shaded area will probably be best. I've noted a link to a good fact sheet addressing your needs. Although we are currently listed as being in zone 5, some areas are 6b or even 7a.  Because of the increasingly colder winter weather, I sometimes look for plant material that can withstand temperatures in the zone 4 category.
Best of luck with your ground cover project.
