Standing Cypress in SW Minnesota #887583

Asked October 09, 2024, 3:41 PM EDT

I found something new in my lawn, and an Internet search identified it as possible Standing Cypress. Can this survive a summer in SW Minnesota? Should I move it from my lawn to my garden?

Lyon County Minnesota

Expert Response

Good Morning Shelly,

Thank you for contacting the U of M Extension Service.

Please click on the following link from the Missouri Botanical Garden: https://www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/PlantFinder/PlantFinderDetails.aspx?taxonid=285425

This information indicates it is hardy in zone 6-9. It should not survive the Minnesota winters and cold temperatures.

You can surely do what you want to protect the plant for the winter, but I would be surprised if it survives in Minnesota.

In Lyon county you are in zone 5a: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/planting-zones/minnesota-planting-zones.htm

Good Luck!
