Dahlias: sprouted tubers that were not planted in the spring of 2024 #887577

Asked October 09, 2024, 3:05 PM EDT

I have several dahlia tubers that sprouted but were not planted in the spring of 2024. What do you suggest I do with them? Also what are your thoughts on digging up the tubers for storage for next spring 2025----do I store the whole clump and divide in spring OR divide them now? Can you suggested a good way to mark the tubers? Has the zone for Brentwood NH changed? I always thought it was 5. thank you, Cheryl Rossman <personal data hidden>

Hi Cheryl,

Thank you for contacting UNH Cooperative Extension with your questions about your dahlias.  I have included a link to a fact sheet that discusses when to dig up dahlias and how to store them over winter.  You can use a felt tip pen to write directly on the tubers to label them.

I could not find a definitive answer concerning your bulbs that were not planted but have sprouted. Since your tubers have sprouted, they have already lost some of their energy.  However, you may want to store them, and plant them next spring.  They may not grow or may only produce foliage and no flowers.

I have included a link to the most recent (2023) USDA plant hardiness zone map where you can find your zone by using your zip code.  The zones have changed slightly, due to climate change, since the last update in 2012.
