wasps in silver maple knots #885608

Asked September 17, 2024, 3:42 PM EDT

I HAVE A WASP NEST IN A KNOT OF MYSILVER MAPLE TREE. I HAVE ALREADY SPRAYED WASP SPRAY BUT NOW HAVE A DIFFERENT PRODUCT AS THE BLACK FLAG DID NOT DO THE TRICK. MY SON SUGGESTED TO ME THAT I MAY DAMAGE THE TREE BY SPRAYING DIRECTLY INTO THE KNOT. AND THAT IS MY QUESTION. THANKS

Ramsey County Minnesota

Expert Response

The wood surrounding/comprising the knot is probably dead, so it's unlikely the insecticide will damage or otherwise affect the tree.

When wasps are no longer present it's best to close or cover the cavity/knot so it isn't accessible to them next summer.
