bright white caterpillar #885601

Asked September 17, 2024, 2:58 PM EDT

I saw a very bright white caterpillar which was eating the leaves of a bush about an inch & half long along side the bike path on corner of Beech street and Hayes in Holland township. I don't have a picture. I have asked others but they say they have never seen it before. What could it be?

Hello Dale

Without a picture, of course, we can only give you some of the possibilities. Here is a bulletin with a couple of the most likely white caterpillars seen in autumn.

However, there are several good pictures of white caterpillars here with which you can compare. Some of these caterpillars may not live here in Michigan so, if you think one of them matches what you saw, you should do a little research and see if that particular caterpillar actually lives here in Michigan.
