Jar unsealed in pantry #885583

Asked September 17, 2024, 2:15 PM EDT

It came up in a discussion about spoiled food and how to dispose it. Someone said to throw away the entire jar so you don’t breathe in botulism spores. I say dump the contents and wash jar as normal. If I find a jar in the pantry that came unsealed and is spoiled should I really throw away a perfectly good jar?

Expert Response

The National Center for Home Food Preservation does recommend disposing of the jar if the food has spoiled or you suspect botulism, see resource here.
