MSMA Target 6 Plus, Sandburs, and our lawn and garden #885546

Asked September 17, 2024, 11:11 AM EDT

Is MSMA Target 6 Plus safe to use for eliminating sandburs and other grassy weeds in our lawn? Is it safe to use for controlling weeds in a produce garden? If it's not safe, is there a substitute post-emergent product you would recommend?

Expert Response

Good Morning,

Thank you for contacting the U of M Extension Service.

We are volunteer Extension Master Gardeners and Tree Care Advisors. We do not endorse any particular products.

The first thing to do with ANY PESTICIDE is READ THE LABEL!

I pulled up the label for MSMA Target 6 Plus from the US EPA website. It states:

PRODUCT INFORMATION
Target 6 Plus is a post-emergence herbicide for use in cotton, golf courses, sod farms and highway rights of way. Target 6 Plus contains a surfactant (wetting agent) in proper ratio for best results. It is not necessary to add additional surfactant to the spray tank. Local conditions and recommendations vary; consult an agricultural experiment station or extension service weed specialist for recommendations in your area.

This product is not for residential turf grass lawns.

Please click on the following link from the U of M Extension Yard and Garden website:

The label on the product you want to use, will indicate if it is safe for a produce (vegetable) garden. This will  be different with products for lawns.

Eventhough you can purchase many different pesticides online, they may not be authorized to be used in residential settings. The US Environmental Protection Agency will have copies of the labels for the products you are considering.

Good Luck!
