Ok to transplant woodland aster mid-Sept? #885520

Asked September 16, 2024, 11:05 PM EDT

I have had good luck w woodland asters. Too much, in fact, as they have taken over the front of my garden. I’d like to move them to back of border. Is mid-September an ok time to transplant? They are flowering now

Expert Response

Hi,

They are pretty resilient. Just make sure they are watered well before digging (then let the soil dry for a day) and then water afterwards. They may wilt and die back to the ground some but they should come back next year fine.

You could also cut them to about half so they are mostly the stalks and some leaves and then dig. This will allow the plants to put energy into re-establishing the roots instead of trying to preserve the flowers.
