How do I stop these insects from eating my shed? #885518

Asked September 16, 2024, 10:55 PM EDT

I have a shed that has unfinished pine in the interior. Can you tell me what type of beetle this is, how to get them out of the shed, and what I can do to the shed to discourage them from coming back. Maybe polyurethane, or another type of sealant? I originally thought these were white spotted pine sawyers, but after looking at more photos I’m not so sure. But there are a lot of them inside, and they are definitely boring through the wood. The shed will be used to store gear such as bikes, ski’s, snowboards, and other outdoor equipment. Thank you!

Expert Response

That is an insect called a Western Conifer Seed Bug (Leptoglossus occidentalis). They enter structures sometimes in the fall because they are looking for a sheltered location for the winter. They do not eat wood and they will not infest stored food products or anything else in the home. They are a nuisance, but not damaging.
