How does one eliminate a yellow jacket nest between the siding and the soffit of a house? Is there a risk of the insects damaging the house/ entering the house?

Expert Response

Yellowjacket nest activity will soon be over -- in a few weeks, as we start to freeze overnight, they will die out or disperse and abandon the nest -- so if they cannot be avoided until then, the nest entrance will have to be located and treated with wasp spray/dust to kill the workers. Do not attempt to block the nest entrance instead, as this could force the wasps to chew their way out, which might happen to be inside the home instead of outside. More information can be found on the page linked above. If needed, you might need to hire a pest control professional to physically remove the nest. While the wasps won't damage the house per se (the nest is built out of a paper-like material they collect outside, so they shouldn't be chewing anything apart), as the remains of the larvae or adults that might die within the nest later this fall are left behind, there might be a risk of it attracting rodents.
