Nelly Moser Clematis #885387

Asked September 16, 2024, 10:24 AM EDT

We are wondering if a Nelly Moser Clematis is a good choice to plant to grow under a locust tree in the southwest part of our backyard? We would like to plant one on each side of the tree, hoping for a more private backyard. We are new to Northern Colorado but have had great luck growing regular clematis's in Denver. We appreicate this wonderful service that CSU provides.

Expert Response

Hi Donna,

Would the clematis get regular sun if planted under the honeylocust - what direction would the clematis face? If it gets regular morning sun and some afternoon shade, that would work fine. But if it's too shaded most of the day, it would not perform well.

You mention the tree is in the SW part of the yard, but this doesn't necessarily mean it will be the same exposure for the clematis.

In general, yes, clematis are a good suggestion for northern Colorado gardens and can do well with regular moisture.
