Is this Asters Yellow? #885370

Asked September 16, 2024, 8:38 AM EDT

I noticed these green growths on the head of my purple cone flowers. Is it Asters Yellow which would require killing the whole plant? Or someone mentioned it might be some kind of mite that would only require cutting off the flower. Please advise!

Expert Response

This does not appear to be Aster Yellows, and we agree that it more closely resembles damage from Coneflower Rosette Mite, which is often mistaken for the pathogen. Clipping off the abnormal flower heads when mites are the cause of deformities is the best method of suppression.
