How to deal with squash vines #885239

Our community garden has been asked what to do with squash vines that may be infected with disease or pests after the harvest. Leave to freeze? Burn? Put in trash? Burning on site is nit an option, they would have to be removed first.

Do not leave them in place if infected because many pests overwinter in soil.  If the vines are infected putting them in compost could spread the disease if the temperature is not high enough to kill the pests. Cities have different policies regarding garbage and yard waste. So check where to put them with your county/city. For example:
