Baby hoary vervain suddenly shriveled up #884672

Asked September 09, 2024, 8:32 PM EDT

I planted a very small hoary vervain three weeks ago. I have been watering it every day that it doesn't rain, and it has looked great for the last 3 weeks, even as early as this morning. But tonight, I noticed that this plant has completely shriveled up. I also noticed that the root looked a little loose. Not knowing what to do, I put some topsoil around the root and added some water. Is there anything I can do to revive this poor plant?

Expert Response

Heat stress is a good possibility.  First move the wood chips away.  Wood chips touching plants during hot windy weather can quickly dehydrate plants. Water at the root level.  Watering leaves can be counter productive.  And finally with so much wood nearby stepping near the plant may have dislodged it from the soil. Personally I would plant it in a container for a couple of weeks and then sink the container into the soil for the winter.

Also curled leaves can be a sign of herbicide damage if herbicides were applied nearby and drifted over.
