Hi,
We think this is most likely a type of wood decay fungus that is probably growing off underground roots. Was there a tree or shrub in the area that was removed or near by? Mushroom ID is really difficult to pinpoint and sometimes depends on the gills underneath etc. We would not advise on its edibility without being able to clearly identify and it does not appear to be an edible mushroom to our knowledge.
Increasingly, there are mushroom growers attending many farmers markets throughout Maryland so perhaps you could find a company and ask them? An internet search for a local mushroom grower may help. If you're on social media you could see if there is a mushroom or fungus group you could join to help with ID.
